That day at Hollywood Park in California, trainer Charlie Whittingham won the $18,950 American handicap. World Champion jockey, Bill Shoemaker was aboard King Pellinore for  the winning ride in 1:48 flat over the
 1 1/8 mile grass course. For the victory presentation, Shoemaker and Whittingham climbed aboard the Army Jeep of retired General Omar Bradley, who received a rousing ovation as guest of honor on the holiday program.
